The image used in the header is taken from a fascinating poem I recently discovered, on google books, entitled “The Press, A Poem: Published as a Species of Topography” by John McGreery, published in Liverpool by Cadell and Davies in 1803. It is an extended history and celebration of the press.

The image in the header is explained as follows:

The narrative of the poem, and the accompanying images, explain that it is the press which enables the preservation of art (and so saves “genius” from her mourning).

The poem strikes me as the kind of earnest paean to communications technology that is both typical of, and unique to, the Romantic period.
